Appraisals | The System, Time and Money and the Qualified Appraiser

The System, Time and Money, the Qualified Appraiser

Appraisal procedures vary, but the most thorough one is outlined here. Detail is more important on an insurance appraisal than on an estate appraisal because it is necessary for satisfactory reproduction of the article. The complete appraisal should include:

  1. The millimeter dimensions, quality, weight and identification of each major stone. (The same information should be offered for minor stones, except that some of the details may not be as extensive. A statement of the number of stones and their total weight may be sufficient.

  2. Cutting, color and clarity grades of major diamonds. Any internal or external marks should be described.

  3. Identification and assessment of the workmanship of metal used in the mounting.

  4. A thorough description of the item (photo optional).

  5. Explanation of the grading system and in- formation that makes the technical and scientific data easy to understand.

  6. The estimated value of the item.

Forms should be signed, dated and numbered by the appraiser. The original is for the customer's file. One copy is supplied for the insurance company, and a second copy is kept by the appraiser.

Time and Money

Y
ou should allow ample time for this service to be completed. Sometimes gems must be removed from the setting for closer examination. Occasionally an item may be sent to a special laboratory for further observation. A jeweler will charge a fee for appraisal services. This should be based on the amount of time required for the appraisal. Ask for an estimate in advance.
