Sapphire Sapphire was
worn by the kings of old as a defense from harm. it is also believed to
protect on from captivity, preserve and increase courage, improve all
the senses. Sapphire comes from the Latin "Sapphirus" meaning
dear to the planet Saturn.
Varieties,
Qualities & Origins
Sapphire denotes all colors of the gem spices corundum other than
red which are called ruby. Sapphire alone generally refers to the blue
color, while "fancy sapphire" refers to many different hues
including yellow, orange, pink, purple and green. The most valuable blue
sapphires are medium dark in tone, vivid blue to slightly violet-blue
hues. The lighter, more brilliant sapphires are mined in Sri Lanka. The
majority of sapphire is mined in Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Africa and
US. Kashmir once produced among the finest quality sapphires.

Most sapphires are subjected to heat as a normal part of the
processing phase to improve their color. This enhancement is permanent,
stable and does not require any special care.
