Old Man of the Mountain
For thousands of years, the glacially created profile of the "Old
Man of the Mountain" graced the granite cliffs of Profile Mountain
in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire. In the fledgling history of the
State, Daniel Webster said of the Old Man, "men hang out their signs
indicative of their respective trades; shoemakers hang out a
gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a
gold tooth; but in the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has
hung out a sign to show that there He makes men." New Hampshire has
long taken pride in the Old Man, using the image as an easily
recognizable state symbol.
On Saturday, May 3, 2003, part of the granite ledges that created
the image fell, adding another chapter in our dynamic history. Now
when we look up to the place where the profile stood guard, we see
the image only in our remembrance. But in this nostalgia, we honor
all who struggled before us to create the wonderful State in which
we now reside and take pleasure.

Old Man. With pride in our heritage and remembrance of this icon, we
